Get yer ice cream here!
Well, summer is pretty much over and yes I have been lazy when it comes to updating this site. So without further delay, I bring you the “Make your own ice cream” post.
So this year, it was unbearably hot. Sometimes in the triple digits and mind you I do not have the convenience of central air. So, rather than cool myself down with the usual bag o’ peas on the forehead, I decided to take it one step further and make my own ice cream. It’s actually very simple and the costs compared to buying some from the grocery store works out to be much cheaper. So let’s get on with it, shall we.
What you will need:
- Rock salt - you can get this at your local supermarket
- Milk or cream
- ice
- a ziploc quart size bag
- a ziploc gallon size bag
- measuring cup
- measuring spoon
- vanilla extract
- a towel and a pair of gloves or one of these (yeah, it’s a hamster ball. I figure it would work quite well though)
Alright, now that we have all our ingredients together, lets’ make some ice cream!!
1. Take your quart bag and fill it with 1/2 cup milk or cream or half and half ( I doubled the recipe and used 1 cup half and half here)
2. Add 1 Tablespoon of sugar
3. Add 1/4 Teaspoon of Vanilla extract
4. Seal up your quart bag and agitate it a bit to get all the flavors mixed.
5. Take your Gallon ziploc and fill it 1/2 way with ice
6. Add 6 TBSP of Rock Salt
7. Now put your Quart bag inside of the Gallon bag and zip it up
8. You will need to use a towel or wear some gloves for the next step. The bag gets pretty damn cold and after about 2 minutes your hands will start to burn (much like Frostbite) I learn the hard way!
Wrap the bag in a towel and agitate back and forth for about 5 minutes or until you get the desired consistency. I tossed it back and forth with a friend. You need to make sure it gets tossed around a bit to get the mixture nice and creamy.
9. Now grab yer spoon and enjoy the creamy goodness
Note: I experimented a bit with different flavors other than vanilla. You can also add nuts or chocolate to your ice cream in step 3 for that extra touch. Substituting yogurt for milk, also works great for a frozen yogurt treat.
